è un posto estremo (al confine del niente) tra i fiumi cuito, cuanavale e tombo dove le forze della rivoluzione angolana, namibiana (SWAPO) a cubana fermano l'avanzate dell'esercito razzista bianco del sud africa e delle forze controrivoluzionarie dell'UNITA nell'anno 1987 e 1988 una grande battaglia combattuta in 6 battaglie diverse ... viene considerata la più grande battaglia nell'africa dopo quella di el alamein (tra tedeschi e italiani contro le forze alleate) della II guerra mondiale)
ed è anche la prima battaglia dove le forze bianche non hanno avuto la meglio e hanno dovuto negoziare la pace con le forze nere (anche i cubani possono essere considerati dei neri), rinunciando a distruggere la rivoluzione angolana e, soprattutto, rinunciando all'annessione della namibia che diventa uno stato indipendente (se avessero vinto i sud africani sarebbe continuata ad essere una provicia con sistema di aparthaid - segregazione della popolazione nera)
insomma, delle sei battaglie le prime 3 sicuramente sono state vinte dai bianchi, le ultime tre dai neri che hanno contrastato l'offensiva dei bianchi + UNITA e, dopo aver perso l'iniziativa, hanno dovuto ritirarsi, i sud africani considerano che hanno inflitto molte più perdite agli angolani e cubani di quelle subite (ed è vero) ma strategicamente a cuito cannavale hanno perso la guerra
abbiamo visitato il memorial stile socialista (fatto dai nord coreani - che ammetto sono degli esperti in merito - stesso stiile di quello che ho visto in corea del nord alcuni anni fa) nel villaggio di cuito cannavale (dove non c'è menzione del contributo cubano ! che invece è stato determinante) ... abbiamo visitato i luoghi dello scontro e visto i carri sudafricani distrutti dalle mine che rappresentano ancora una seria minaccia ... abbiamo dormito nel campamento dell'organizzazione HALO TRUST (ONG scozzese) che stà ancora sminando la zona (una delle zone più inquinate da mine anticarro e antipersonali del mondo)
abbiamo trascorso la serata con una ragazza inglese di 33 anni a capo dell'operazione di sminamento che ci ha raccontato su come operano e ... della qualità eccelsa delle mine ITALIANE ! (che mantengono intatta la lora carica di morte per decenni !) ....
domani attraverseremo una zona non ancora ripulita completamente per ritornare da menonque sino al confine con la namibia (ma se restiamo sulla strada niente pericolo!)

... we visited the places of the clash and saw the South African tanks destroyed by mines which still represent a serious threat ... we slept in the camp of the organization HALO TRUST (Scottish NGO) which is still engaged in mine clearance the area (one of the most polluted areas by anti-tank and anti-personnel mines in the world) we spent the evening with a 33-year-old English girl at the head of the mine clearance operation who told us about how they operate and ... the excellent quality of ITALIAN mines! (which keep their death charge intact for decades!) ....
tomorrow we will cross an area not yet completely cleared to return from menonque to the border with Namibia (but if we stay on the road, no danger!)
